1909: The NHA is founded at a private meeting at 300 St. James Street in Montreal. The Montreal Canadiens would be founded two days later as one of the charter members.
1934: The Canadiens deal Bob McCulley traded to Boston (Can-Am) for Sheldon Buckles.
1937: Wilf Cude recorded his 20th career shutout as the Montreal Canadiens beat Boston 2-0 in a penalty-free game played in Montreal.
1943: Rookie goalie Bill Durnan improved his career record to 11-0-2, with a 6-2 win over the visiting Chicago Black Hawks. Durnan went on to set an NHL record for rookie goalies by going 12-0-2 in his first 14 games.
1972: Rookie Steve Shutt scored the first goal of his NHL career and added an assist, in the Canadiens 4-4 tie against the visiting Atlanta Flames.
1974: Goaltender Michel Larocque recorded his 1st NHL career shutout in the Canadiens' 2-0 win over the visiting Atlanta Flames.
1978: Montreal's Guy Lafleur scored his 13th career hat trick and added an assist, and Steve Shutt had a goal and four assists to lead the Canadiens to an 8-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres.
1995: The Canadiens suffer their worst defeat at home, an 11-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy allows nine of Detroit’s goals (five in the first period, and then another four in the second period.) When coach Mario Tremblay finally pulls him, Roy stormed past him and told team president Ronald Corey"It's my last game in Montreal."
Roy, who told reporters he would not have demanded a trade had Tremblay sat him in the second period, was suspended by the club the next day and traded to the Colorado Avalanche on December 6th.
