Today in Habs History: May 16th Edition

1976: Guy Lafleur scored the game winning goal as Montreal beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 to sweep the best-of-seven final series, in Game 4 of the Finals and win their 19th Stanley Cup championship.

 

 

The Flyers’ Reggie Leach was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, scoring 19 goals in the playoffs. The loss snapped Philadelphia’s quest for a third straight Stanley Cup, while at the same time it would be the first of four straight for Montreal.

1971: Jean Beliveau scored the final two points of his NHL playoff career on assists, as Montreal beat Chicago 4-3 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

 

 

1978: The Canadiens (and Ken Dryden) extended their team and goalie playoff records with their 11th straight win in the Finals (dating back to 1973). Guy Lafleur scored at 13:09 of OT in a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins, in Game 2 of the 1978 Finals.

 

 

1993: John LeClair scored two goals to lead the Canadiens to a 4-1 playoff win over the New York Islanders, in Game 1 of the Wales Conference Finals. It was Montreal's 9th consecutive playoff victory, matching a club record set in 1978.
