Today in Habs History: May 4th Edition

1969: The Montreal Canadiens beat St. Louis 2-1 in Game Four of the Finals, to become the Stanley Cup Champions for the time in franchise history. John Ferguson scored the Cup-winning goal.

The Conn Smythe Trophy went to Serge Savard, the first defenseman to receive the award.

Also on this day…

 

1978: Guy Lafleur scored two goals and added an assist in the Canadiens' 3-2 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals.

 

1993: Guy Carbonneau scored at 2:50 into overtime to lead the Canadiens to a 4-3 playoff win over the Sabres in Montreal and moved to a 2-0 lead in the Adams Division Finals series. Vincent Damphousse scored twice for the Canadiens.
