March 22 has certainly had it’s share of milestones and moments over the years. Thanks to Francis Bouchard for finding this rare color photo from 1947.
1919: Newsy Lalonde became the first NHL player to score four goals in a Stanley Cup Finals game, leading the Canadiens to a 4-2 win against the PCHA's Seattle Metropolitans.
1924: Rookie Howie Morenz recorded a hat trick as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the WCHL's Calgary Tigers 6-1 on the way to their second Stanley Cup Championship.
1932: Morenz scored a goal and added three assists as Montreal won 4-2 over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
1947: Toe Blake scores two assists in Montreal’s 5-4 loss to the Chicago Black Hawks. Blake’s first assist of the evening, on a goal by Maurice Richard, gave him 500 points for his career. He became the first Canadiens player to reach the plateau.
1955: Jacques Plante and Charlie Hodge shared the shutout, and Bernie Geoffrion scored a goal and an assist as the Canadiens won 2-0 over the Bruins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals.
1959: Jean Beliveau scored two goals and had an assist during a Canadiens' 4-2 win at New York. This gave Beliveau a league-leading 45 goals for the season and 91 points, breaking his record for most points by a center in one season. Dickie Moore set an NHL record for most points in a season, when he scored a goal and an assist for his 96th point of the year.
1962: Jacques Plante became just the second goaltender in NHL history to win 40 games three times in his career. Plante picked up his 40th victory of the season, when the Canadiens beat the Maple Leafs 4-1.
1972: Frank Mahovlich scored his 42nd goal of the season to become the highest single-season goal scoring left winger in Canadiens' history, as Montreal tied 3-3 with the visiting Maple Leafs. Mahovlich broke the record held by Dickie Moore.
1980: Montreal's Larry Robinson scored twice and added two assists as the Canadiens tied 5-5 with the Hartford Whalers.
1989: Shayne Corson scored his second career hat trick and Chris Chelios picked up four assists as the Canadiens won 8-0 against the Quebec Nordiques. Patrick Roy extended his Forum unbeaten record to 24-0-2. The win broke Bill Durnan's team record (for unbeaten streak at home) of 22-0-3 set in 1943-44.
